The brief descriptions below are designed to familiarize you with our staff's training, professional credentials and work experience.
Dr. Samuel S. Mendicino is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he received a B.S. in Biological Sciences. He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 1983 from the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago where he served as the student body vice president. He completed a residency in foot and ankle surgery at the Harris County Podiatric Surgical Residency in Houston, Texas and was the chief resident during his last year. Dr. Mendicino has been in practice since 1985 and is board certified in foot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS). He has served as a member of the ABPS Board of Directors, its' credentials, residency training and examination committees. He is the Board's examinations chairman and has served as an oral examiner. He is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is active in several of the College's committees and functions. Dr. Mendicino has served as chairman of the Surgical Skills and Annual National Scientific Seminar committees and is a frequent instructor at many of the College's Surgical Skills Courses. He is a past president of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association and has published in several scientific texts and journals.
Dr. Mendicino has been involved in post graduate medical education for over 25 years. He is the director of residency and fellowship training at West Houston Medical Center's Podiatric Medical and Surgical Residency Program and its Fellowship in Reconstructive Ankle and Foot Surgery. Dr. Mendicino is active in international education and has demonstrated surgical procedures or lectured to orthopedic, podiatric and trauma surgeons in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Lebanon. He lectures regularly at local, state, national and international surgical conferences.
Dr. Mendicino is regularly consulted by other lower extremity surgeons on unusual or complex cases. Often these patients are referred to him for their care. In addition to performing elective, traumatic, arthroscopic, endoscopic, pediatric, and reconstructive surgery of the ankle and foot, Dr. Mendicino provides non-surgical care. He has completed specialized training in advanced nerve decompression for the treatment of lower extremity neuropathy.
Dr. Mendicino's hobbies include hunting and fishing and he enjoys traveling. His family includes his wife Wanda (an operating room nurse), daughter Hannah, and son Sam.
Dr. Asia E. Lo is a graduate of Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas where she earned dual Bachelor degrees in Biology and in Spanish. Dr. Lo received her medical degree from the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa in 1994, currently Des Moines University. She then went on to complete two years of surgical residency and a one year fellowship in Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery at the Harris County Podiatric Surgical Residency Program in Houston, serving as chief resident during her last year. Dr. Lo has been in private practice since 1997. She is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is Board Certified in both Forefoot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery.
In addition to her practice, Dr. Lo remains actively involved with her former residency program, serving as a surgical instructor, wound care specialist and Curriculum Coordinator for West Houston Medical Center's Podiatric Medical and Surgical Residency Program. Presently, Dr. Lo serves on several committees and is an oral examiner for the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. She has served on the Board of Trustees of West Houston Medical Center and is a past President of the Harris County Podiatric Medical Society. She is also a former board member for the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. In addition to performing elective and emergent surgery and treatment on the foot and ankle in adults and children, Dr. Lo also specializes in wound care.
In the first quarter of 2010, Dr. Lo was honored to be selected as the Physician of the Quarter by the staff at West Houston Medical Center.
Dr. Lo’s hobbies include traveling and spending time with her family, which includes her husband Mark and her twin sons Dylan and Jackson.
Dr. Manish K. Patel, a native of Albany, Georgia, obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in biology and psychology from the University of Georgia. Dr. Patel completed his medical training along with a Masters of Business Administration and Masters of Science from Barry University in Miami, FL. Dr. Patel moved to Houston to complete his Foot and Ankle surgical residency at West Houston Medical Center. He then completed an ACFAS accredited fellowship in Reconstructive Hindfoot and Ankle Surgery, where he obtained more extensive training in reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle including total ankle replacement. Dr. Patel specializes in External Fixation, trauma of the lower extremity, Charcot reconstruction, and complicated Hindfoot/Ankle fusions. Currently he is the only surgical Fellowship trained podiatrist in Houston.
